NORTH WALES FIRST FOR RALPHH – IN LONDON

The Eirias Hockey club, based in Colwyn Bay, has become the latest hockey club to partner with RALPHH in making defibrillation equipment at sporting locations the norm, rather than an exception.

The Club – which takes its name from a local park – runs three men’s and three women’s teams as well as a junior programme for groups from under 8 through to under-18’s. Senior teams play in the North West Hockey League and opponents come from as far away as Cumbria as well as Lancashire, Cheshire and Merseyside.  The home location is some 20 miles away from appropriate local emergency services, so the addition of the gift of an on-site defibrillator from RALPHH is a logical development.

Club President Tim Baker has been the recent recipient of an award from Sport Conwy for 52 years involvement in hockey. He met his wife Anne through hockey and she now holds the position of Treasurer of the Club. Helped by other members, they intend to arrange for the defibrillator to be housed in a weatherproof, secure exterior box that will be erected onto their clubhouse.

Chairman of RALPHH, Richard Allen (left) met the couple and presented them with the defibrillator whilst they were on a pre-Christmas visit to London. They are pictured in a hotel. The charity’s work in support of hockey clubs extends across both Wales and England, as well as requests for help from many other exerting sports.

“We welcome hearing from other sporting clubs across the country who want to improve the safeguarding of players and spectators by being ready to deal with the unexpected,” said Richard Allen. “Whilst the origins of the charity are in rowing, we believe that both more hockey and rugby clubs will want to contact us and request, without cost, the potentially life-saving equipment.”
